"The living room" of Waldmünchen, the market square with monuments and fountainsBoth the fountain in the middle of the lower market square with the figure of St. Josef and the fountain on the upper market square come from the Schönthal monastery. Both octagonal fountains were brought to Waldmünchen in the course of secularization at the beginning of the 19th century. On the square in front of the town hall is the Nepomuk monument, which was erected by the Frank brothers in 1769 to commemorate the extensive sparing of the city by the Pandours. It is one of the few monuments to be chronographed; the capital letters in the inscription add up to the year of construction. On the left side of the monument is the stately Waldmünchner town hall, the time when it was built cannot be precisely dated. It fell victim to the severe city fires in 1658 and 1708 and could only be rebuilt in 1717. The town hall was built in its current style in 1907 and expanded in 1986 by the so-called Stadlerhaus with a 3-storey basement. The carillon, which was donated by the citizen medalist Josef Dietl in 1986 and which plays his desired melody "Die Schwirzer vom Landl" in his honor, sounds from the town hall tower. At 5 p.m., the melody "is Feierabend" sounds, appropriate to the time of day.
