Bochum's first department store opened in 1921 with 31 shop windows and 64 sales departments. Above the main entrance on Kortumstraße, the god Mercury, as the protector of trade, greets customers, alongside him plants and crops are harvested, and a merchant ship crosses on the horizon. The relief was created by the artist Johannes Knubel.
The attractions of the department store included - some until the 1980s - a refreshment room - in which concerts were also given - a lending library, "the largest toy show in Westphalia" and Christmas shop windows with fairytale worlds. Bochum's first escalator ran here in 1928. The house was owned by the Jewish Alsberg family.
In 1933 she was pressured into selling the house as part of the "Aryanization" movement, but successfully resisted for a number of years. The house remained secretly owned by the family until 1938, but was renamed after the Bochum doctor and poet Karl Arnold Kortum (1745-1824).
The department store owners Emma, Martha and Alfred Alsberg perished in concentration camps after 1941. Three children survived abroad.
After severe destruction in World War II, the exterior facade was reconstructed true to the original, and the interior was built in the style of the 1950s. The house flourished again. In the 1960s it offered 1,200 jobs and was said to have the best range of goods in the Ruhr area.

The Cologne department store company Gebrüder Alsberg AG expanded its business particularly in the period around 1900. Alsberg was initially represented in Bochum from 1886 as a partner of the merchant Adolf Levi, from 1890 with its own branches. In 1913 work began on the huge new building. The First World War interrupted the construction work.
