In the spring of 1916, when the Austro-Hungarians unleashed the 'Stafexpedition' in an attempt to invade the Po Valley, the quiet hamlet of Vallonara constituted, like many other localities in the Vicenza foothills, one of the immediate rear lines of the Asiago plateau front: this passage it was an incessant coming and going of men, vehicles and artillery sent to counter the very serious threat; while in sad procession from the mountains the refugees of the Plateau descended. It is estimated that more than 1,000,000 soldiers of the Royal Army passed from this point to and from the Plateau.
