In 1330 Friedrich der Ramsperger probably built the new castle on his own land. Access to the main castle is through a simple gateway in the south of the polygonal ring wall made of quarry stone. When you enter the complex, the first thing that catches your eye is the well-preserved and elaborate kennel. The entire castle is surrounded by it and the walls are equipped with several semi-circular towers. The ongoing security and excavation work suggests that a tower and other buildings were located to the north. Excavations have to show exactly what these looked like. Some conclusions can be drawn from the historical accounts. Three tower-like buildings can be identified on the map of Apian from 1568. It could be a residential building, a gate tower and a keep, the foundations of which have already been proven. Below this area of the keep are two barrel-vaulted cellars, which curiously enough are accessible from the outside through the western ring wall. This doesn't make any sense from a defense point of view, maybe they were added later when the defense function wasn't that important anymore.

The castle ruins offer wonderful views. The pilgrimage church of the Birth of Mary with its war memorial on the castle hill invites you to pause and take a moment to reflect.
