The parish church of St. John in Moosbach is visible from afar, especially to the south and west, due to its exposed location on the edge of the pile. The 41.5 meter church tower towers far above the houses of the Moosbach village. The church has experienced many upheavals and renewals up to the present day.
In the Middle Ages, the patron saint of the church was not Saint John the Baptist, as is the case today, but Saint Blaise and Saint John the Evangelist, at least until 1526.
The beginnings of the present parish church and the tower probably date back to the Romanesque period. The nave walls are Romanesque. Choir, tower and vaulting of the church are late Gothic. In 1691 the church was extended by two side chapels. The late Gothic ribs of the choir were knocked off and the church was baroque. Over the next few decades, the church received the furnishings that are still in place today. The high altar is particularly eye-catching, an early Rococo creation around 1720-1730, with the large figures of Emperor Heraclius and Empress Helena, both of whom played a major role in the retrieval and recapture of Christ's cross.
The high altar is a rococo creation from around 1720 to 1730. The central image on the high altar used to be Mother Mary. Since 1990 the high altar has once again contained the image of John the Baptist, the patron saint of the parish church.
On the right side of the nave you can see Saint Florian (patron saint of firefighters), Saint James (patron saint of pilgrims - Way of St. James!, for good weather and much more) and Saint Isidor/or Wendelin (peasant saint).
The Way of the Cross is special because of its art form and size. It is a painting on reverse glass from Neukirchen bei Hl. Blut.
