The Capuchins settled in Meersel-Dreef in 1687.

Their first residence, the old barn, still exists. In 1797 they were expelled by the French Revolution. From 1838 to 1846, the Trappist Fathers of Westmalle took over the monastery with the idea of building a new settlement.

Partly at the request of the population, the Trappists had to make way for the Sons of Saint Francis. In 1865, the Capuchins were again solemnly welcomed by the entire population of Meersel - Dreef, Galder and Strijbeek. The chaplaincy was founded in 1968.
