The current four-arch bridge, made of local red sandstone, was built in 1772 under Abbot Ambrosius Balbus, who secured the financing, while the Reicholzheim residents provided manual labor and rigging. However, the bridge was not built over the former Tauber River, which roughly follows the course of today's bypass road, but further west, on dry ground. After the construction was completed, the Tauber River was diverted into its new riverbed. In 1775, Abbot Ambrosius Balbus had the statue of St. Nepomuk, the bridge's patron saint, erected in the designated niche.
