The Castle of Manzanares (Castillo de Pilas Bonas) is included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Historic-Artistic Interest carried out by the Ministry of Culture in 1979. Although there are still many dark spots regarding the origin of the Castle and the population of Manzanares, various historians agree that the Castle must have been built around the year 1239, after the demarcation of the territories of the orders of Santiago and Calatrava.
The reasons for its construction would probably be the proximity to the Azuer River, the existence of wells with plenty of water or the intersection of roads and paths.

The conversion of this castle into a modern inn allows us not only to visit it and explore part of its interior, but even sleep like a medieval knight, or enjoy the gastronomy. An interesting starting point to get to know the town of Manzanares.

This fortress was built when the territories of the orders of Santiago and Calatrava were separated, being the headquarters of the second, and of the Commandery of Manzanares. But it not only served as a defense against Muslims. Between 1808 and 1812 it was used as the headquarters of the French troops in the War of Independence. In the year 1836 it was a garrisoned fort for the Christian army that fought in the Carlist War.
