The Münstertor was built in 1357 as the first of the city gates at the southern end of the street of the same name and led to the country road to Bad Münstereifel.
In the engraving from 1746 (The medieval townscape of Zülpich in a drawing from the early modern period), the Münstertor is shown with a similar front gate to the Bachtor, including the two round flank towers. Due to the high volume of traffic, the city wall at the gate had to be removed. The Münstertor was also badly damaged in the war.
The crenellated corner watchtower, which it had as the only gate, was not restored until 1976. During excavation work for the roundabout completed in 2012, the foundations of a double gate system were found. This confirmed the depiction in the engraving from 1746.
Like the Kölntor, the Münstertor is home to a carnival society, the Prinzengarde. The problem with converting it into a guardhouse was the staircase. They soon agreed on the variant of a steel structure next to the tower, as it is visible today.

Great city definitely worth a visit. The city walls and gates are well preserved and you get a glimpse of what it used to be like here.
