The castle, first mentioned in 1194, was sold on April 24, 1543 to the brothers Christoph and Erasmus von Schneckenreith or Schneckenreither. This family died out in 1569. At an unknown point in time, the castle came under the rule of Drosendorf and is now owned by the Hoyos family. [1]

Since Georg Matthäus Vischer did not capture the Eibenstein ruins in visual form, in contrast to numerous other buildings in the vicinity, the local researcher Franz Xaver Kießling believes it is theoretically possible that the castle was already deserted during his lifetime. The castle ruins are said to have been inhabited at least temporarily during the Thirty Years' War.

In various legends, the last owner of Eibenstein Castle is associated with the Knights Templar and the castle is finally ravaged by rebellious farmers.
