Founded in 1056 by Welf IV as a private monastery and burial place of the Welfs and settled by Benedictines from Altomünster, Weingarten was one of the most powerful monasteries in southern Germany from its inception. The collegiate church, built in the Hirsau style from 1100 onward, was already impressive in its dimensions. The foundation stone of the Baroque church was laid on August 22, 1715. It replaced the Romanesque church of the Benedictine abbey. The new building was consecrated by the Bishop of Constance, Johann Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg, on September 10, 1724, during the tenure of Abbot Sebastian Hyller. Its titular saints are Martin of Tours and Oswald.
