Just like ancient Rome, Bamberg is considered a city on seven hills. The Altenburg has stood on the highest hill west of the old town since at least 1109. Even the viewing terrace offers a beautiful panoramic view over Bamberg and the surrounding area. From the keep, the view is even more spectacular. The Giechburg can be seen to the north-east about 20 kilometers away.

E.T.A. From 1810 Hoffmann was employed at the Bamberg Theater as a director's assistant, dramaturge and decorative painter. In 1812 he lived in one of the wall towers. Hence the name Hoffmannsklause.
