During the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648, Sommersdorf and the castle suffered heavily from war, Flicht and the plague. Then came the danger of the French War. In the middle of the 19th century, the top floor was demolished due to dilapidation and the drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the castle has been inhabited again by members of the von Crailsheim family. After the Second World War, there was a retirement home in the New Palace. Major restoration work was carried out from 1952 to 1957.
