The disused sandstone quarry on the outskirts of Büdingen is a special place: this is where stonemasons hammered the block out of the wall from which the Celtic Prince of the Faith Hill was made. A display board at the quarry commemorates this event.
The Lower Buntsandstein here is not of volcanic origin, but it impressively shows the subsoil of the Vogelsberg volcanic area. The sandstone is light, reddish-brown in colour, with a fine-grained structure and slightly clayey.
The quarry was in operation until shortly after World War II. Numerous buildings in Büdingen are made of this material, including the Büdingen Castle of the Princes of Ysenburg.
