The Schillerplatz is surrounded by numerous cafes and restaurants, making it one of the city's largest restaurants. Here is also the Jerusalem House, where Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem shot himself in 1772, whose fate became the model for Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther".

With its numerous half-timbered houses and the Franciscan church, with the unusual addition of a school building, Schillerplatz is also one of the city's places worth seeing.House number 5 is particularly interesting for tourists. This is where the Braunschweig legation secretary Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem shot himself out of lovesickness in 1772. The young lawyer Johann Wolfgang Goethe, who much preferred writing rather than the dry matters of the legal system, was reminded by this suicide of his love in Wetzlar, which also ended unfortunately. That's why he was inspired to write the epistolary novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther". The worldwide success of this novel, published in 1774, led Goethe to finally give up trying to become a lawyer.quermania.de/hessen/wetzlar/wetzlar13.php
