A welcome change of pace on the tour. From the ferry, you have a fantastic view of the Danube and the valley below. The rolling ferry connects the towns of Spitz and Arnsdorf by water. The ferry, consisting of two interconnected hulls, has a carrying capacity of 20 t (10 t for the bridge alone) and can carry both passengers and vehicles. The cargo deck substructure is made of steel, while the superstructure is made of wood. The catamaran design ensures good stability. The ferry is held in place by a 485 m long suspension cable stretched across the Danube and anchored in sturdy towers on the banks. The ferry and suspension cable are connected by a so-called yaw cable. No expensive energy is required for propulsion; it simply uses the current of the Danube. The rolling ferry has a crew of four, working in pairs.

In 2004, an artwork by Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, "Camera Obscura for the Danube," was installed on the ferry. The ferry crossing takes between 5 and 7 minutes, depending on the water level. Memorable!

In order for a yaw cable ferry to be propelled across a river, two forces must work together. One force is exerted by the yaw cable, a steel cable to which the ferry is flexibly attached. So that both forces can set the ferry in motion, the ferry must be placed at an angle to the current.

The ferry is also a place to relax. Completely silent, the ferry travels across the busy waterway. This mandatory break offers time to look around, marvel, and enjoy, whether on foot, by bike, or by car. If you miss the departure, there's ice cream in Spitz and a snack bar on the Arnsdorf side. Waiting can also be enjoyable...
