The story tells that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe hiked in 1772 on the old post road coming from Wetzlar. Disappointed by the unrequited love of his beloved Charlotte Buff, he left Wetzlar on September 11, 1772. A few days later he is said to have taken a break on a rock at the Goethepunkt, which is named after him today, and said the sentence: "...this is a nice place to die."
(That's roughly what the information on the display board was)

This unfortunate love story and the fate of the young Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem served as a template for Goethe's novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther".
Anyone interested in Goethe should definitely follow in Goethe's footsteps in Wetzlar... and of course visit the Brentanohaus in Östrich-Winkel. There you can admire the room in its original condition, which Goethe used to live in from time to time.

The Goethe point is located above the Obernhof vineyards. You can drive until just before the viewing platform. From there you have a wonderful view of the Arnstein monastery and the Lahn valley.
