Before turning left into the Hasselbachtal, it is worth taking a detour to the Drei Steinen, a formation of very soft sandstone. The cliffs have taken a variety of forms over the millennia. The binder in these sandstones weathers quickly, making the stone very soft. These sandstones belong to the Polyclopus layers of the Erdmittelalter (Lower Dogger) and are likely to be about 170 million years old. They have been included in the route since 1999.
