As you run through these green meadows on soft paths, you encounter the Stone Men on a 2,000 meter high rock dome. There are over 100 characters made of stones deliberately placed on top of each other, some small, others the size of a person.

There are many theories about their existence, but none have been confirmed. What is known is that they have been here for a long time: inlays in the rocks and flint tools indicate that the place was frequented since the Stone Age and then also in the Middle Ages. A court document from 1540 shows that witches' dances and satanic festivals were celebrated in this place about 500 years ago. Very ancient inlays in the rocks suggest that centuries ago the viewpoint was a place of Celtic worship.

There are more than a hundred "stone men" at this place, which is called Schöneck and is located at 2,003m. There are various stories about its origin: for example, that it was petrified people who carelessly watched the witches dance and celebrate. Incidentally, in 1540 one of the most famous witch trials in South Tyrol took place in the Sarntal, namely that against Barbara Pachler. According to legend, she also hung around here as the witch "Pachlerzottl".
