The village church of Schkortleben is only preserved as a ruin. Its former appearance is documented by an information board with historical photos set up by the ruins. She reports that the church can be assumed to be in 1580 for the first time, since an entry in the church register has been preserved from that year. As early as 1680 it is said to have been in a state of disrepair, which is not surprising given the location in the flooded Saale-Aue and the wars of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Claims that churches are fortified churches just because they were built a little heavier than others have not yet been proven for Saxony-Anhalt. Investigations have even shown that such places of worship could often not be defended at all, since, for example, the alleged arrow slits were placed in militarily nonsensical places. In the case of Schkortleben, there is also this assertion, but the fact that it can only be proven so late indicates that it was not a fortified church, since there were no longer any opponents east of the Saale to be opposed should have protected in this way.

Makeshift repairs in the third quarter of the 20th century could not stop the decay and so in 1985 the onion dome had to be removed from the tower. In the following 15 years, the decay progressed so rapidly that it was decided to clear the remains, which lasted from 2000 to 2003. As a result, what was once the most important and imposing building in the town now looks like an ancient ruin.
