        View of the Triftenperre.
The Triftsperre is a building on the Ilz above Hals near Passau.
        history
The Triftsperre is a result of the once economically significant wood rafting in Passau, which was started from about 1729. In 1788, the first Triftordnung was issued in Passau. At that time the drift on the Ilz from the Bavarian Forest to Passau lasted about six weeks. From 1827 to 1831 was therefore built at Hals of 115.5 meters long, 3.2 meters wide and 2.3 meters high Triftsperr tunnel, which led from then on the Triftwasser. This tunnel significantly shortened the longer route through the Halser river loop, which allowed up to 100,000 cubic meters of timber to be transported annually. The Trift itself came to a halt only after the end of the Second World War by the continuous expansion of the forest roads.
The Triftsperre connects a long boardwalk with the Gasthof Zur Triftsperre.

The castle ruin Hals is located in Passau district Hals. The name Hals is derived from the location of the castle on the neck, that is the narrow loop of the Ilz. On a narrow rocky ridge above the village are the ruins of the once mighty spur castle.
