The route of the former Roman road is unusual. Coming from Lopodunum (today's Ladenburg) it led via Heidelberg in the direction of Osterburken. With the course over today's Spechbach, the route deviates significantly from a route that would actually have been cheaper and shorter.
Such a striking deviation from the functional course of the street could be explained, for example, by special local raw material deposits or the presence of religious sites. The archaeologists and historians suspect that there may already have been a pre-Roman settlement that was connected to the Roman road as a military supply point.
