The former official castle, Saaleck Castle, stands on a mountain spur. The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century. This includes the keep, a tower about 22 meters high, which has been accessible as an observation tower since 1998. On clear days you have a wonderful view over the Saale valley and into the Rhön.

Saaleck Castle was a castle built in the Middle Ages on a 280 m high spur of the Schloßberg (308 m above sea level)[1] near Hammelburg in the Bavarian district of Bad Kissingen. The only relic from the 12th-13th century that is still visible today is the keep, which has been preserved in its original state. During the Thirty Years' War, it lost about six meters in height due to dilapidation. The appearance of the complex is mainly due to the period after the Thirty Years' War.
