The catacombs of San Sebastiano are an underground cemetery. This is one of the rare Christian cemeteries that has always remained accessible even though of the four original floors the first is almost completely destroyed.

In ancient times the catacombs were known simply as "catacumbas", from the Greek "katà" and "kymbe", which literally means "near the cavities". But even before being a cemetery, the area had pozzolana quarries, about ten meters deep under the road surface and here an original pagan cemetery was born, later used by Christians.
