On June 17, 1405, the Battle of the Stoss took place here. 400 Appenzeller defeated a troop of 1200 mounted abbot and Habsburg soldiers and thus sealed the separation of the old and at that time still undivided country of Appenzell from the sovereignty of the Prince Abbot of St. Gallen. A memorial commemorates this day.The half-cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden, which have been separate since 1597, celebrated the 600th anniversary of the battle separately - the Catholic Innerrhodians, as every year, with a procession. As a reminder of the battle, the push-shooting takes place every year. It will be held on the last weekend in August. On April 3, 1927, the Stoss-Schützenverband was founded. From 1937, the Stoss blocking point was built with tank barricades and 1940/41 bunkers, which were reinforced with 17 modern shelters in 1988/89.
