The place is very beautiful and characteristic and is also located near a fountain where you can get water. In addition, someone has set up a stand, minimalist but very useful, with some tools to fix your bike. If you need to recover energy, there is an ice cream shop next door. In short, a strategic point. Update to the last round of October 2024: the stand with the tools seems to be gone. The rest is as I left and described it.

The water wheel is located in the center of Groppello, a hamlet in the municipality of Cassano d'Adda, on the bank of the Naviglio della Martesana.
This large water wheel was built in Groppello by Carlo Borromeo, with the aim of raising water and channeling it to the gardens of the Villa Arcivescovile.
Even today it is popularly nicknamed "Rudun" and was restored and put back into operation in 2009, with only educational functions at that point.

Large wheel on the bank of the Naviglio Martesana, popularly called "rudun", was built by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1618 to raise the water from the canal and bring it to the kitchens of the palace as well as irrigating the vegetable gardens and gardens of the villa.

The "rudun" is the symbol of the hamlet of Groppello d'Adda and from here starts the dirt path that leads north towards Paderno d'Adda. If you cycle eastwards, you will reach the city of Milan along the Martesana cycle path.

Old water mill for flour with water flowing out of the Adda. All in all a nice piece of history

The wheel of Groppello is a strategic point: there is a fountain that refreshes all bikers and an ice cream shop if you want to take a longer break

A stop in Groppello is a must: the small fountain always offers fresh refreshment, especially in summer

Once you reach Cassano d'Adda, the easternmost point, you continue north, immersing yourself in nature and the quiet of the Adda river that amazed us with its spring scents and breathtaking landscape; I'm not exaggerating, try it!
We started out for a bike ride with times and averages, then we decided to ride it all at a gentle pace, stopping to take photos and videos because it really deserves to be experienced like this.
Due to a landslide near Porto D'Adda, we were forced to make a small detour, going up to the village via a steep climb of very shiny cobblestones that reminded us that in addition to walking, you can also work hard on a bike. Going up, you then come across the church and there you turn right onto a small road that leads to the cemetery, from where you go down a slightly technical shiny cobblestone that has been hailstormed, and you arrive again to take the path on the Adda river.
In Brivio, with "the spirit of the Tour in beauty", we stopped to eat in a restaurant.
Once we set off again, we took the last leg that took us to Lecco station, from where we returned to Milan by train.

A charming ride! History and nature intertwine along this simple route. Best done in spring/summer. Be careful of some singletrack!
