    It is the largest French military cemetery and a First World War memorial where more than 100,000 French and German soldiers died in 1915. The cemetery covers 25 hectares and contains more than 40,000 graves, some of which are individual graves.

      Inaugurated in 1925, the necropolis commemorates the thousands of combatants who died on the hill of Lorette between October 1914 and September 1915; it involves :

      a military cemetery where 40,058 bodies rest in individual graves and in eight ossuaries;
      the "lantern tower", 52 m high;
      the "chapel-basilica", of Romano-Byzantine type, 46 m long and 14 m wide.
      You will also find the Ring of Memory, a memorial on which are engraved the names of 579,606 soldiers of all nationalities who died in French Flanders and Artois between 1914 and 1918. It was inaugurated on November 11, 2014.

        The church dedicated to the Mother of God under the title "Notre-Dame de Lorette" rises in brilliant white and is visible from far away. But the brilliant impression is deceptive, at the latest when the visitor to the site realizes that they are in a huge military cemetery. Around 20,000 individual graves and a further 23,000 victims of war and tyranny buried in ossuaries are deeply disturbing.
