Elmischwang Castle is a pleasure house in the perennials that was converted into a castle in 1796. In the 14th century, the Elmischwang manor belonged to the Canons of St. Moritz in Augsburg as a fief. In the following time it had many owners, Martha von Freyberg and Raymund Fugger. Several owners followed from the 17th century, including the noble patrician families from Augsburg von Schnurbein and von Stetten. Christoph David von Stetten lived in the pleasure house during the summer months, which he had converted into a castle in 1796. In 1875 Elmischwang Castle passed to the baronial von Aufseß family.
In 1902 Alexander Freiherr von Aufseß had the original castle torn down. The “new” (and today's) castle was built directly afterwards, in the same place, namely “with its characteristic four 'Nuremberg corner cores'
Between 1957 and 1970 the old people's home, which had been in the castle since 1946, was taken over by the Order of St.
Since 1998 the old people's home has been privately owned, the Freiherrlich von Aufseß’sches Altenheim Schloß Elmischwang GmbH.
The renovation of the entire area began in 1999/2000, with an extension to the old people's home being carried out.
