Large variety of moor types and the associated biodiversity.
Especially in times of famine, such as after wars, attempts were made to wrest agricultural benefits from even the most barren areas, drained and fertilized and also reforested with fast-growing spruce trees.
In the meantime no more peat is cut. Damaged raised bogs are being renatured again to allow biodiversity and endangered animals and plants to retreat.
in addition, peatlands are very important for climate protection. Intact peat bogs can absorb 15-30 times their own weight in water and are a permanent store for carbon.
1 hectare of bog can offset the CO2 emissions of around 5 medium-sized cars - more than 1 hectare of tropical rainforest.
