Warburg (Low German: Warb (e) rich, Latin: Warburgum or Varburgum) is a town in the district Höxter in the east of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a middle center and with about 24,000 inhabitants, the largest city of the Warburger Börde. Warburg was first mentioned in writing around 1010; The first mention of the city as a closed village dates back to 1036. In the Middle Ages Warburg belonged to the Westphalian Hanseatic League. From 1815 to 1974, the city was the seat of the district Warburg. Since March 19, 2012 may Warburg lead the official addition Hanseatic city. The cityscape is characterized by historic buildings, stone and half-timbered houses and the location on a ridge.
