The madstone.
A long time ago, the beautiful and virtuous maid Vroni, a young orphan, lived in Orb with Hans Riemer, a citizen and church curator who was respected for his piety.
Riemer, who was already old and a widower, burned with sinful desire for his beautiful maid and wanted to force her to do his bidding. She rejected him. So his love turned to hate, and he plotted to spoil it.
One Sunday morning the statue of the Blessed Mother in the church was seen robbed of its precious gold and silver ornaments. It was found that Vroni was the last to be seen kneeling at the still image. Her belongings were examined and the missing treasures were found at the bottom of her chest. What was the use of all her protestations of her innocence, she was taken to the dungeon and brought to court the next day. The church curator Hans Riemer acted as a prosecutor. His accusation weighed all the more heavily because he was an honorable and respected citizen and at the same time Vroni's employer. The judge then made the verdict. Church robbery was punishable by death. When Vroni heard the verdict, she appealed to God and all the saints as witnesses of her innocence to have the cruel verdict overturned.
But the judges would not be swayed, and one said: »The verdict has been made, and as little as you can move that stone from its place, you will just as little change the verdict.<< - At the same time he pointed to a stone from enormous proportions. Vroni lay on her knees and with the fervor of an innocent, pious soul she addressed her prayers to Mary, the protector of oppressed innocence. And the unbelievable happened! The stone rose as if carried by invisible hands and settled on the Virgin's outstretched apron. Like a saint, Vroni was brought back to the city. Under the impression of this miracle, the church curator confessed that he himself had stolen the treasures from the church and placed them in his maid's chest.
The verdict that judges had previously spoken about Vroni hit him now. The stone can still be seen today and is named in memory of the Madstein (i.e. maid stone).
