The De Meinweg National Park is of great significance from a geological point of view, due to its unique terraced landscape in the Netherlands, with three steep transitions between the different terraces. These were created by erosion of the sediments deposited by the Rhine and Meuse in the distant past and by shifts in the earth's crust. The total height difference between the three terraces is 50 meters. The Rur Valley is 30 meters above N.A.P. and the Beatrix plateau at 80 meters. Two stream valleys have emerged across the terraces: the Boschbeek and the Roode Beek valleys. Between these streams and stream valleys there are quiet fens and vast forests and heathlands. Nowadays a viper population occurs here again.
