The only still preserved moated castle in Eastern Switzerland. Integrated into it is a very nice restaurant.
Hagenwil Castle was first mentioned in 1264 in connection with a knight Rudolf von Hagenwil. During the following centuries, various families owned the castle as a fief. During this time it was not spared from looting and devastation. In 1684 the monastery of St.Gallen took over the castle under its own administration.
