A first structure likely stood on the site in the early Christian era, followed by a building destroyed by fire in 894. The current church was rebuilt between 1395 and 1401, adding side chapels and a magnificent Gothic west façade, which can still be seen in a sketch by Domenico Morone (preserved in the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua). The bell tower has seven bells tuned in the B-flat scale.
