The castle was built by the noblemen of Gemen. The oldest part of the complex is the keep from 1280. The history of the lords of Gemen has been characterized since the 12th century by constant disputes with the prince-bishops of Münster, who have also been secular sovereigns of this region since that time.
In order to preserve their imperial immediacy, the castle owners repeatedly entered into successfully changing alliances. The castle changed hands several times until on May 24, 1822, Reichsfreiherr Johann Ignatz Franz von Landsberg-Velen bought it.
Von Landsberg-Velen was raised to the rank of count on October 15, 1840 by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia and then called himself Count von Landsberg-Velen and Gemen.
The castle is still owned by the von Landsberg-Velen and Gemen family. Gemen Castle has been leased to the Münster diocese since 1946, which has used it as a youth education center ever since.
