The Schaumberg (the "local mountain" of the Saarland) is one of the highest peaks in the Saarland with a height of 569m. In Celtic times there was already a refuge on the mountain, in the Middle Ages the "Schauenburg" stood there until the Thirty Years' War. At the foot of the foam mountain is the place Tholey with the Benedictine abbey of St. Mauritius. The 7th century abbey is the oldest monastery in Germany and was abandoned during the French Revolution in 1794. The resettlement took place in 1947. Today the Benedictine abbey is the spiritual center in Saarland. It's worth a visit. According to legend, St. Wendelin - whose grave is in the Wendelinus basilica in St. Wendel - was the founding abbot of Tholey Abbey. The widespread volcanic basalt stone tholeyite (tholeit) was named after the village. Source: Text information board

The rest area is on the old Roman road

      𝑫𝒊𝒆 𝑹𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂ß𝒆

The Rheinstraße - also known as Römerstraße or Rainstraße - is the second ancient long-distance road in the region, next to the Salzstraße, and connected the seat of government of the Roman Empire in Trier with Schwarzenacker in the Saar-Palatinate district, where a large Roman settlement was also established. It is believed that the road was already used as a supraregional connection route in pre-Roman times - i.e. during Celtic settlement. Roman settlements emerged along the Rheinstrasse, such as the Vicus Wareswald in Oberthal and Tholey. On the route between Wareswald and Wiebelskirchen, the road crosses the watershed between the “Blies” in the east and the “Alsbach” and “Hirzbach” in the west. Source: Text information board
