The church was probably built in 1599 and, after suffering damage in the Thirty Years' War, was renovated in 1689. From 1669 onwards, a hermit who lived in a bare room above the sacristy looked after the little church. Until around 1870, Herrnrast was the scene of a two-day church fair with stalls and stands, which the Bavarian King Max II is said to have attended with his family. In the 1960s, the chapel was in danger of falling into disrepair, partly due to damage to the roof. An arch in front of the apse threatened to collapse. The church owes its rescue to the Pfaffenhofen entrepreneur Claus Hipp.
