            Valico Montepiano, wonderful place.
The Bosco di Montepiano is one of the most beautiful cerrete in Basilicata which extends between 700 and 1,200 m. There are many reasons of interest, first of all the village of Valmiletta, an evocative group of ancient stone houses (dating back to the 18th century) built as a base for agricultural activities, but also the paths that connect the town to Montepiano. Along the way you will run along arable land, bushy pastures, ancient farmhouses and sparse forests of Turkey oak, or the stretches bordered by dry stone walls and thorny shrubs, perhaps a way to make the passage obligatory for the flocks. You meet the characteristic Pietra del Corvo, a beautiful sandstone rock formation, an evocative balcony towards the upper valley of Salandrella, Gallipoli-Cognato and Accettura. Once in the wood itself, a network of ancient paths and more recent forest roads allows you to visit the splendid columnar cerrete with trees up to 30 meters high. Of considerable historical importance is also the Tratturo di Montepiano, one of the many testimonies linked to transhumance and cattle breeding together with the ancient casone where once the products of Podolic cows were transformed. Still visible at the edge of the wood, the ancient Neviera di Montepiano, a deep moat where snow was once kept. Montepiano, like other Lucanian forests, was a place of refuge for bands of brigands who ran around Lucania after the unification of Italy. Worthy of note are the paintings by Ernesto Treccani that inspired the composition of a master of twentieth-century Italian symphonic music, Riccardo Malipiero. In the wood of Montepiano, moreover, the Maggio is chosen: a large Turkey oak that will be transported by couples of oxen to the village to act as bridegroom in the famous wedding of the trees, the Maggio di Accettura.
