The Staffelsee is a shallow, partly boggy lake with a total of seven islands (Wörth, Buchau, Grosse Birke, Mühlwörth, Small Birch, Gradeneiland and Jakobsinsel) right on the edge of the Alps.

The lake has an area of about 7.5 sq km, is at most 40 m deep and has a circumference of almost 20 km. The main inflow and outflow is the Ach, the average duration of the full water exchange is around 1.3 years. Like the neighboring Riegsee, so has the Staffelsee its origins in the last ice age.

In summer, many bathers come to one of the beaches (eg in Uffing, Seehausen or Murnau) of the Staffelsee, which, like the neighboring Riegsee also, due to its Muldenlage, quickly warms up. Nevertheless, it is frozen almost every winter, sometimes up to three months long. In spring and autumn, the Staffelsee is often circled by bicycle on the approximately 30 km long Seerundweg, there are also several paddleboats and rowboat rentals and a small ship with about 100 places that connects the banks.
