    Approx. 320-450 year old oak.

Allegedly the thickest in Germany. ;)

It's wonderful to be able to see such an ancient oak tree by the side of the road. It's still alive, currently has lots of fresh shoots and will hopefully outlive us all.

The Katthol oak in Belau is one of the most impressive natural monuments in Schleswig-Holstein. The greatest threat to it is humans.

This tree doesn't look as if nature, God or whoever had planned for it to grow towards the sky. It looks as if an indifferent fate had piled everything up into a tower: wood, bark, leaves, roots, rot, fire, cuts, life and death, all mixed up. The trunk looks like a misshapen cone at the bottom, and like a landscape of rubble at the top.

Its base is covered with thick, bulbous growths. At a height of one meter, the circumference is almost 13 meters. This makes the Katthol oak, which stands on a field path between Belau and Wankendorf in the south of the Plön district, probably Germany's thickest oak. Their estimated age is between 320 and 450 years.

Those who like old trees can see a nice specimen here. In my book about the old German trees, the age is given here as 320 to 450 years.
