Harpener ponds (Bochum)
In the footsteps of mining
The Harpen Ponds - also known as Werner Ponds - are a combination of still waters that are partly fed by the Harpen Stream. This arises as Bövinghauser Bach in Dortmund and changes its name when it flows over the city limits to Bochum. Located in close proximity to the hustle and bustle of the Ruhr-Park shopping center, the local recreational potential of the Harpen Ponds surprises. Originally designed as sewage ponds for mining in Bochum, the ponds offer walkers, cyclists and joggers an oasis of calm that is not overcrowded. The only thing that stands out from this is the feed-in point of the pit water of the Robert-Müser colliery with loud noise and bubbling, which is responsible for the milky cloudiness and sometimes for the unpleasant smell of sulfur from the mineral-containing water. There is seating for a break. A wedding forest can also be found at the Harpen ponds. A network of paths developed from the west, south and north leads you freely through a special flora and fauna.
