The idyllic wooden bathhouse on the grassy plain in the middle of the wilderness and the crystal clear deep pool makes West Valley Hot Spring one of my favorites, though the water is a bit hot for some people. Accessible via a rough but navigable 3-mile dirt road, a short sandy section requires some speed or pushing. Choosing to then continue to Blue Lake via Old Blue Lake Road however is a bad idea; recommended only for those with an urge to explore the area, or a masochistic penchant for riding over bumpy boulders. A smoother alternative is to return from West Valley Hot Spring to the Jess Valley County Road 64 and take the new, paved Blue Lake Road. outdoorproject.com/united-states/california/west-valley-hot-springs
