The Oberkasseler bridge, although not in its present form, is the oldest of the Düsseldorf Rhine bridges for private transport. After the Hammer Railway Bridge, it is the second permanent bridge over the Rhine in Düsseldorf. The Oberkasseler bridge already had two predecessor buildings at the height of the old town, which were still constructed as ship bridges.

The most spectacular was the construction of the Oberkassel Bridge (1969-76). Because the important traffic artery could not be dispensed with during the construction of the new bridge, it was built parallel to the old Oberkassel bridge. April 1976 moved about 50 meters north to its current location.

The Oberkassel Bridge, which belongs to the Düsseldorf bridge family, was opened to traffic in 1976. Like the other bridges in the bridge family, it is a cable-stayed bridge that appears dynamic and filigree due to its slim construction.
The current bridge of the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke has a length of 614 meters, with a maximum span of 257 meters. The bridge is 35 meters wide and has 2 lanes in each direction of travel as well as a parallel pedestrian and bicycle path on the outside. A free-standing pylon with a height of 104 meters carries the steel cables from which the flat steel structure of the bridge beam is suspended. The bridge was built from October 1969 47 meters upstream of the already existing, temporary bridge in order to be able to maintain traffic during the construction period. In 1973 traffic was diverted to the new bridge and the temporary structure was torn down. In 1976, the entire Oberkassel bridge was moved 47 meters transversely to the location of the original bridge. The transverse displacement of the 12,700 ton bridge was carried out with hydraulic presses and took 12 hours and 47 minutes.
