The Gurk Cathedral is located in Gurk in Carinthia. The building is a pillar basilica built between 1140 and 1200 in the High Romanesque style, which is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Europe due to the lack of structural alterations. The elongated basilica has a double-towered west facade, a gallery, a crypt and three apses. The 100-column crypt is the oldest part of the church. In the year of their consecration in 1174, the tomb of St. Hemma of Gurk was transferred there.Today's parish and former cathedral Mariae Himmelfahrt is located on the eastern edge of the village Gurk on a low terrace near the river Gurk. In the underbuilt, middle Gurktal the imposing, 60 meters high twin towers of the cathedral can be seen from afar.Structurally adjacent to the cathedral is the Gurk Abbey, which housed the chapter of the cathedral until 1792 and then various orders.
