Well, cycling isn't allowed in the park, but the café is definitely the place to go after a ride on the local singletrack or a gravel ride. The park itself is also very worth a visit. Fantastically beautiful even without a mountain bike.

The Akureyri Botanical Garden (Lystigarður Akureyrar) is located about 45 meters above the western shore of Eyjafjörður in the south of the northern Icelandic city of Akureyri, about 50 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle.

Some women from Akureyri founded the Parkverein in 1910 to beautify their city. Already in the previous year they had been allocated by the city administration one hectare of land. The garden, the first public park in Iceland, was run by the Parkverein until 1953. During this time, the garden area grew to 3.6 hectares. In addition to its task as a place of rest and relaxation, the garden is a field of experimentation. It is being tested which shrubs, trees and other plants can survive on the edge of the Arctic.

Jón Rögnvaldsson's plant collection was bought in 1957 by the city. Rögnvaldsson stood in front of the garden together with Margarethe Schiöth for many years. Of the two deserving personalities and Matthías Jochumsson, the poet of the Icelandic national anthem, a priest from Akureyri, a bust is in the garden.

In addition to arctic plants, plants are cultivated in the garden from the temperate latitudes and high mountains of the earth. The Icelandic plants are present with about 400 species in the southeastern garden corner. At the end of 2007, the garden consisted of about 7,000 species.

In the garden there are public toilets. The entrance to the garden is free. The gates are always open.

Some black houses look out of the bushes. Of these, Eyrarlandsstofa is one of the oldest houses in Akyreyri.
