Remember: in death everyone is the same, whether they were king, beggar or peasant in life. A reminder to the living to curb earthly arrogance in the face of eternity. The old inscription with the three skulls reminds us hikers of transience.
A quiet place that invites you to contemplate. That knight from the 13th century felt this when he founded a hermitage here, 600 m above sea level. At least that is what a source reports from the time of the Waldshut War of 1468.
For centuries, the chapel of St. Apollonia in Baltersweil was a resting place for pilgrims who passed here to make a pilgrimage to Maria Einsiedeln or to the tomb of the apostle James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, who was executed by Herod Agrippa in 44 AD.
