Forte Verle (Werk Verle in German) is a fortification near the Vezzena pass. It was built by the Austrians before the "Great War" and, as can be seen, suffered bombing from the Italian army. It's impressive.

The view is incredibly intense, in the worst sense, representing a dark page in human history, but it is essential that it is learned.

Built by the Austrians between 1907 and 1914, along with the Campo di Luserna and Belvedere di Lavarone forts, it formed the most advanced defensive belt on the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy (now the border between Trentino and Veneto) to block the road from the Asiago Plateau through the Assa Valley.

It was subjected to heavy bombardment by Italian artillery (particularly from the dominant Verena and Campolongo forts, which it could not return fire from). Shell craters can still be seen in the surrounding meadows today. Severely damaged, it was largely repaired and rebuilt. After the Strafexpedition of 1916 and the advance of the front toward the Asiago Plateau, it served as an optical link and logistics headquarters.

The fort is now unsafe, cordoned off, and closed to visitors. What caused it to deteriorate to this extent wasn't so much the shelling during the war, but rather its dismantling by salvagers in the 1930s to extract its iron.
