In the heart of Haarlem is Molen de Adriaan, a Dutch mill on the romantic river Spaarne. Originally built in 1778, it was rebuilt after a catastrophic fire in 1932 about 10 years ago. A tour of Molen de Adriaan will tell you everything you need to know about the operation of windmills in general, and models and presentations will explain how different machines can be powered by wind power. History of Molen de Adriaan
At the original site of the windmill is also the foundation of the tower, from which the city center was defended. It was used to make cement, paint and tanning agents, and was later turned into a tobacco mill under a new owner. For centuries, this was one of Holland's most impressive windmills. When it burned down in 1932, a central point of the city was lost. It took seventy years for Haarlem citizens to save enough money to rebuild the mill.
