wonderful and worth seeing the historic old town of Annweiler

The historic old town with numerous half-timbered houses invites you to take a stroll along the old mill wheels on the river Queich and through the tanners' quarter. At the eastern entrance to the old town, located directly on the Schipka Pass, there is the remarkable "Museum unterm Trifels". The name Schipka Pass for the passage between the houses is historically incomprehensible. Legend has it that an old man used to tell stories from the Russian-Turkish war. The Schipka Pass is a pass in the Balkan Mountains, which was fiercely contested in this war. Another story tells that here was the narrowest entrance to the city and the cargo of the wagons had to be reloaded on wheelbarrows to get in there.

1116/1118 Annweiler was first mentioned in a document. In 1219 the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick II raised the village to a free imperial city. This makes Annweiler am Trifels the second oldest city of the Palatinate after Speyer. The city gained importance especially under the Stauferkaisern.
