The Reinhold Forster Erbstollen was part of and the entrance to the extensive tunnel network that undermines the districts of Eiserfeld and Eisern. It belonged to the Eisenzecher Zug, a combined mine with over 20 connected iron ore mines.
The tunnel entrance from 1879 is in Eiserfeld and is typical of Siegerland mining. On March 21, 1805, the tunnel was opened to mine and extract the Tretenbacher veins.
With a maximum shaft depth of approx. 1350 m, it is considered one of the deepest iron ore mines in Europe. Ore was mined until February 29, 1960. Temporarily used as an explosives storage facility, the Reinhold Forster Erbstollen has been open to the public as a show mine since 1983 after it was expanded by the Eiserfeld local history association and is accessible over a length of 470 m. The tunnel is named after the naturalist and geologist Johann Reinhold Forster.
